The excitement is building for Thanksgiving and winter breaks. Many students will be leaving their living spaces and vehicles for large portions of time during the breaks. As you may be aware, burglaries can increase during holiday periods, especially in areas where the population can become sparse, such as apartment complexes with large student populations. You may be wondering how your student can keep their rooms and belongings safe while traveling. We have a few tips to help you and your student have a relaxing and safe break. We have also included some travel information that may be helpful in planning.

Safety Information
- Tell your student to lock everything, including their car, home/room doors, windows, etc.
- Never leave a spare door key under a mat or car keys in the car when parked.
- If your student will be leaving their car in Tuscaloosa over the break, encourage them to park it in a well-lit and populated area, preferably a parking lot or garage with security cameras.
- While your student is away from Tuscaloosa, see if they can ask someone staying in town to keep an eye on their apartment or belongings. They can pick up any delivered items and the look of activity may keep potential threats away.
- Your student should let their landlord know they will be gone during breaks if they will be gone longer than 5 days. This may be required in the lease, and if something happens in your student’s absence, the landlord needs to know they’re not there!
- If your student cannot find someone to look after their belongings, using timers to turn lights, radios, and televisions on and off can simulate a normal routine.
- Keep belongings – especially valuables – out of sight, both at home and in the car. It may be better for your student to bring valuable items, such as laptops, jewelry, or sentimental objects, with them while they travel.
- Don’t post personal travel plans on social media for all to see, wait until after break to disclose location via social media.
- Encourage your student to always be aware of their surroundings, whether this be while traveling home through an airport/ bus station, or in general day-to-day life.
- If your student will be out of town for several days, have them contact the postal service to cancel those services for the time they are away. Mail piling up can make your student’s home a target for burglaries.
- Unplug appliances such as TVs, computers, printers, toasters, extension cords, etc., in case there is a power surge.
- Throw away perishable food items.
- Clean up outside and put away trash cans, grills, and outdoor furniture. Do not put grills inside the home.
- Take out the trash before departure.
