A common misconception goes like this: the bigger the car, the safer the occupants. Although there’s some validity to this notion, it’s not the only factor to consider when shopping for a safe new vehicle. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, several small cars and crossovers on the U.S. market can help avoid crashes or offer protection if one becomes inevitable. The IIHS rates cars for crashworthiness and highlights those that earn top scores and offer some level of crash-avoidance technology.
© IIHS'The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its 2020 top safety picks. This is the 15th year they have awarded vehicles that perform best in their safety evaluations.
The highest award a vehicle can receive is Top Safety Pick+, where vehicles must get good crash test ratings in a variety of tests, including front, side, roof strength (rollovers) and head restraints.
Another safety factor that is evaluated is an advanced or superior rating for crash prevention, amongst vehicles and amongst vehicles to pedestrians. Headlights are also part of the evaluation.
Below is the list of the safest 2020 luxury SUVs, according to IIHS ratings:
2020 Acura RDX
The RDX is a long-running compact crossover that first debuted in the 2007 model year. It entered its third generation for 2019 and is now built on a platform all its own, according to Acura.
The RDX features the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure which is designed to absorb energy from a collision. It also comes standard with six airbags, active head restraints, and safety belts equipped with pre-tensioners and force limiters.
2020 Cadillac XT6
The XT6 is a brand-new luxury three-row crossover model. It shares its underpinnings with the smaller Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia. If you want a large Cadillac SUV, but want something nimbler, safer, and more affordable than an Escalade, the XT6 is a solid choice.
The XT6 competes against models such as the Lincoln Aviator, Audi Q7, and Mercedez-Benz GLE.

2020 Hyundai Nexo
Didn’t think you’d see a Hyundai on a luxury SUV list, did you? However, the Nexo is a hydrogen fuel cell powered crossover with features and price that competes in the luxury class.
The Nexo uses a heavily modified version of the Hyundai Tucson’s underpinnings. The Nexo utilizes Hyundai’s latest safety innovations including surround-view monitors, lane follow assist and remote parking assistant. It has a starting price of about $58,000.
2020 Lexus NX

The GLE is a midsize luxury SUV. The model was completed redesigned for 2020, in its second generation. This safety rating applies to models with e optional front-crash prevention. The GLE with its attractive, roomy, upscale cabin with safety this feature starts at about $60,000.
Tesla Model Y
We are being presumptuous with the Model Y as Tesla has just started making deliveries. However, Tesla aims to make the safest vehicles on the roads and the Model Y’s sibling vehicle, the Model 3 sedan, from which it shares 75% of its parts, has been awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
Other Safe Luxury SUV Models
Other safe 2020 luxury SUVs, which received Top Safety Pick designations include the Audi Q8, Lexus RX, Lexus UX, Lincoln Corsair and Volvo XC40. These models range in pricing and size from subcompact to compact, to midsize.
